Can the Miami Heat sign Durant and Whiteside?

With the NBA free agency period beginning Friday, it's crunch time for the Miami Heat. Team president Pat Riley and the Heat's front office staff have major questions to answer as they prepare for the 2016-17 season. The biggest question involves its biggest free agent: Hassan Whiteside. The 27-year-old center is an unrestricted free agent which means he's free to sign a deal with any team. Fortunately for him, several teams are prepared to offer top dollar for his services come in the coming days. After earning $981,000 last season, Whiteside will sign a deal shortly that pays him up to $22 million dollars a year. Not bad for a player who once had to beg NBA teams just for a tryout. Now, while that's great news for the Whiteside family, it puts the Heat franchise in a tight spot. The issue for Miami is should they use most of their salary cap space to sign Whiteside, or try their luck at wooing Oklahoma City superstar free agent Kevin Durant. Hassan Whiteside

What the D-Rose trade means for the Knicks

Former MVP point guard Derrick Rose is taking his talents to Madison Square Garden. The Chicago Bulls traded Rose to the New York Knicks  in a multiplayer deal Wednesday, according to ESPN. The Knicks, led by team president Phil Jackson hope the trade will make them contenders in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Jackson said earlier this month the Knicks could make the playoffs with a  few tweaks  to the team's triangle offense. New York finished 32-50 last season and missed the playoffs for the third straight year. Rose, 27, will play alongside all-star forward Carmelo Anthony and under new head coach Jeff Hornacek. The trade makes sense for Knicks who desperately needed a point guard and don't have a first round pick in Thursday's NBA Draft. Rose will take scoring and ball-handling responsibilities away from Anthony, who led the team in points (21.8 ppg) and assists (4.2) last season. He will also share the floor with big man Kristaps Porzingis, a 7-fo

It's Time to Respect LeBron James

Fifty-four years of sports heartache and heartbreak gone. The city of Cleveland is on the happy end of one the best sports moments in history thanks to LeBron James and the Cavaliers. LeBron James hoists the Finals MVP trophy Sunday in Oakland. The Cavs became the first team in NBA history to overcome a 3-1 deficit in the Finals as they topped the Golden State Warriors 93-89 in game 7 to win the NBA championship Sunday in Oakland. A week ago, the Warriors were set to win back-to-back titles and cement their place as the best team in NBA history after going 73-9 in the regular season. Yet Sunday, it was the Cavs celebrating on the court inside Oracle Arena. It was a moment so significant several of the Cavs players broke down in tears after the final buzzer sounded. Like him or hate him, Lebron James crying here is raw emotion. He brought a championship to Cleveland. Props https://t.co/f0wL27Cyv2 — Dylan (@DylanTheMan37) June 20, 2016 Here's JR Smith during hi

NBA Finals Encore: Cavs vs. Warriors Preview

The rematch we've all been waiting for is finally here. The Golden State Warriors host the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight at 9 p.m. (EST) on ABC. Here's a head-to-head position comparison of the Warriors and the Cavs. Guard: Back-to-back NBA MVP Stephen Curry and backcourt mate Klay Thompson have more than lived up to their "Splash Brothers" moniker this postseason. While Curry missed six playoff games with a knee injury, Thompson proved more than capable of leading the team in scoring. Both players are averaging just over 26 points per game each this postseason and will likely give the Cavs headaches trying to stop them both. On the other side Cavs guard Kyrie Irving is likely chomping at the bit to face off against Curry. In case you forgot Irving went down with an injury early during last year's NBA Finals, robbing us of the chance to see two elite point guards battle each other on the hardwood. Although Irving won't be able to stop Curry from getting

Will LeBron take his talents back to South Beach?

As the Cleveland Cavaliers battle the Toronto Raptors in the Eastern Conference Finals there is a huge rumor brewing that may make Cavs fans uneasy (again). Could LeBron James possibly return to play for the Miami Heat? Well, according to ESPN's Stephen A. Smith it's very much a possibility .  Smith, who was one of the first to report James interest in teaming up with Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade in 2010, presented the idea Monday that the Cavaliers star may ditch Cleveland again depending on how the team performs in the playoffs. Here's Smith and colleague Skip Bayless discussing LeBron on ESPN's First Take.  According to Smith's report, LeBron's decision to leave is based on the promise he made to Cleveland fans when he returned in 2014. Left to right: Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Chris Paul and LeBron James smile during a photo at the 2016 NBA All-Star game in Toronto. Basically if James fulfills his promise by leadi

Why Dwyane Wade needs a three-point shot

Now that the dust has settled on the Miami Heat's season its time to look ahead at what's next for star guard Dwyane Wade. If Wade wants to figure out what element he can add to his game this offseason, he simply has to look at the number on his jersey. While Pat Riley and the Heat front office figure out how to pay Hassan Whiteside, manage Chris Bosh's health issues and keep the team competitive, there's only one thing for Wade to do. Dwyane Wade Yes, Dwyane, its time for you to develop a consistent three-point shot. At 34, Wade had a resurgent season with the Heat after many basketball analysts wondered if he could play at a high level at this stage in his career. In his 13th NBA season, Wade averaged 19 points, four rebounds, and nearly five assists per game. More importantly, he avoided the injury bug that has plagued him throughout his career. Wade played in 74 games, his most since the 2010-11 season. That's notable especially after team president Pa

Kobe Bryant: Will he stay retired?

Many of us likely woke up this morning (or afternoon) still memorized by the basketball performance we witnessed last night. Yes, I know, Stephen Curry scored his 400th 3-pointer and led Golden State to an NBA-record 73 wins. But I'm talking about that other game in California. Future Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant dropped 60 points against the Utah Jazz in the final game of his legendary 20 year NBA career. Several years down the line we'll likely remember Kobe as the closest replica to Michael Jordan since well, Michael Jordan. Truly great @BleacherReport NBA Senior Writer @HowardBeck had awesome insight on Kobe. His interview with us here https://t.co/X12DTrTwTY — Shep (@shepcbs) April 14, 2016 Whether you loved or hated him on the basketball court Kobe has provided some of the most exciting basketball over the last two decades. But one has to wonder, at 37 years old, is this really the last we've seen of the "Black Mamba?" Bryant recently pa

Heat clinch No. 3 seed despite bad loss

Dwyane Wade (center) has the ball stripped by Boston's Jae Crowder as Avery Bradley defends. The Miami Heat blew a huge lead to the Boston Celtics Wednesday but managed to hold on to the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. The Celtics erased a 26 point deficit to defeat the Heat during the teams regular season finale in Boston. Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas scored a game-high 21 points. His backcourt mate Avery Bradley added 17 points. Joe Johnson scored 19 points for the Heat, which clinched the No. 3 seed after the Washington Wizards defeated the Atlanta Hawks 109-89. Miami led 62-38 at the half but were outscored 25-5 in the third quarter. Dwyane Wade finished with 17 points for the Heat (48-38). Miami is the Southeast division champion and will face Charlotte in the first round of the playoffs. No. 5 seed Boston will face No. 4 Atlanta.

Must watch: Kobe's last game or Warriors chase for 73?

Kobe Bryant (left) and Stephen Curry will battle for television ratings Wednesday. NBA fans are tasked with a huge dilemma Wednesday for the league's regular season finale. Two of the biggest games of the regular season both tip off at 10:30 p.m. (eastern time). On one hand, you have the chance to watch Stephen Curry and the Warriors win 73 games and break the regular season win total set by the legendary 1995-96 Chicago Bulls. Golden State hosts the Memphis Grizzlies -- the same team the Warriors edged by one point last week . On the other hand, there's the chance to watch a legend and future Hall of Famer play in his final NBA game. Kobe Bryant will don the purple and gold No. 24 for the last time as the L.A. Lakers host the Utah Jazz in their regular season finale. If money could talk, it would say the "Black Mamba's" final game is the hotter ticket. The cheapest ticket available for the game at Staples Center is going for $819, according to tiq

Why RG3 to the Browns is career suicide

The Cleveland Browns looked to start fresh at the quarterback position Thursday by signing former Redskins signal caller Robert Griffin III. The Browns signed the former Heisman trophy winner Griffin to a two year contract worth $6.75 million in guaranteed money plus incentives according to Pro Football Talk . The deal is a low-risk, high reward for the Browns because they get a QB who flashed superstar potential (before injuries derailed his career) and only have to pay him third string money. Now entering the #DawgPound for the @Browns ... A quarterback who made plays like THIS not too long ago. #TBT https://t.co/sBg1uKZKVA — NFL (@NFL) March 24, 2016 It also gives them some depth at the QB position before the NFL Draft after the team finally released another former Heisman winner: Johnny Manziel. But here's why Griffin is getting the short end of the stick. In case you haven't heard, Cleveland has earned a reputation as a career graveyard for NFL quarterbac

Starting 5: Why Miami hoops can make the Final Four

March Madness kicks into full gear this week across the country. The University of Miami men's basketball team will make their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2013 after the tournament selection panel made the team as a No. 3 seed in the South division last week. The Hurricanes (25-7) will face No. 14 seed Buffalo at 7 p.m. Thursday in Providence, Rhode Island. It's not too often that you mention the name "Miami" as a serious player to make the Final Four, but since they call it March Madness, here's five reasons why the Canes will make the "Big Dance" in Houston: 1. Coach Jim Larranaga: In a conference with coaching legends like Mike Krzyzewski and Roy Williams , Miami's teams under Jim Larranaga have made their presence felt in the competitive Atlantic Coast Conference. Larranaga is 116-56 in his five seasons as Miami's coach, including a stellar 25-7 record this season. That's impressive considering seven ACC teams made the
